(Author's disclaimer: Naricssa, you weren't online when I wrote this, so I don't know how would you feel about your great-grandmotehr being called Kagami. Since Tayuya has red hair, I also made her have Red Hair. I hope you don't mind.)

There are no happy endings. For every “happily ever after” there is, there is at least another unhappy ending. This is our mission—to, if it is impossible to write
a happy ending, to at least hope that in the darkness, these orphans of war will find peace.

Saint Justica,
Patron Saint of War Orphans

Prologue,

The wind picked up, and dead leaves flapped in the wind, as a cloaked shape walked through the plains. Dressed in a brown homespun traveling cloak, the man looked at the structure that was rapidly nearing. Will Harkins adjusted the clasp and walked on doggedly, holding on to the pitch-black stave of petrified stone. His satchel, filled to the brim with books, looked battered, and he threw off his hood, revealing blonde shoulder-length hair. Quite a place…perhaps the people inside would allow me to stay… He walked through, knocking politely on a nearby pillar—but there were no response. Holding out his stave, he entered—to a scene of carnage. Several dead men were on the floor. He looked at them. They had once been healthy and muscular, but their strength had long since been blown into the winds. Crossing himself, Will blessed the bodies of the dead and moved on. Inside, it was silent—eerily so, apart from the dripping of some old pipe, the skitter off the feet of some rodent. “Is anyone here?” Even with his training as an exorcist and knight of the church, he was unnerved. There was a locked door. Shuffling in his satchel for a book, he muttered something. Instantly, in a small crackle of light, the padlock’s lock shattered, the pieces raining on the floor. He entered—it was a sparse room, with only Spartan furnishings—a bare hardwood bed, a table—and a small child. He walked over. The child gazed back, seemingly unafraid—and then it hissed. Will leapt back—but the baby—a girl—looked back without any trace of fear or threat. was I just dreaming? Outwards, the baby did not seem to have any unusual signs. I heard there was a war on this continent…so would this child be considered a refugee? Will looked into her eyes—and suddenly felt a flash of something—fear?—and then it was gone. For a moment, he was sorely tempted to kill the baby—but he relented, putting down the stave. The oath of our order: “To allow those damaged by darkness to find hope in light, and to help those burnt by the light in finding peace in darkness, regardless of persuasion…” Will was only 16, only just passing the test as an acolyte—he had never been posted on active duty. well, I guess it’s my obligation… He looked at the child. “hmmm…I’ll name you…Kagami.”

Chapter 1

In light I find hope.
In darkness I will find peace.
To help those of need

The Goal of the Order,
a Haiku based on the teachings of Saint Justica

Country of the Lotus, East of the Village of Snow
Cathedral of Saint Latona
Kagami looked at the stained glass image of Saint Elysia and Saint Orun, two members of the order of The Knights of Saint Justica who had themselves been canonized, in their last moment of glory before they had defeated the Two-tailed snake demon that had threatened the church in the village of Snow (for which they had been canonized), also killing themselves in the process. She knew it was not right, but she saw a kind of perverted beauty in the snake—in the seamless joining of each scale, its curved fangs poised. The two Saints were beautiful as well, but they, too paled in comparison to the demon she was supposed to hate. “Are you alright, my dear?” Kagami turned to observe Cardinal Kohaku Kaguya, the kindly scripture study teacher in the giant complex that was part of the Church. Spanning continents—even worlds wide, the church had strong supporters in Snow, Cloud and merchant countries such as the wave. The Cardinal was considerate to everyone, but some people said that he could take on the two of the other three cardinals at once in combat. “Yes…we have so many supporters…and yet we are knights that kill…do we not betray our very values in this war on heretics? Should we not focus on strengthening our own possessions?” The Cardinal smiled, putting a hand on Kagami’s shoulder. “My daughter, the lord once said: ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. (Mathew 9:12)’ The care of the healthy is for the order of St. Elimine…we need to help the sick…I realize that we are at times betraying our own values, but it is the same in healing as in war. To heal a cancer, one must pierce the ulcer—the body is damaged, if only for the sake of keeping the overall healthy…now, my child…you are always the one who is the only one with any bravery—the only one with enough curiosity to question me on these…it is not a bad trait, but there is another time for it. I’ll answer all the questions you need in classes.” He walked off.

Kagami watched him go. The answer made sense…and yet something was troubling her. Suddenly, somebody struck her back way too forcefully, causing her to fall over. “Dozing off again?” Mizuki Fujibayashi, her hair tied back messily, looked down at her. “Really…you shouldn’t go to sleep all the time…” The same age as Kagami, Mizuki was Kagami’s exact opposite. Mizuki’s loud, boisterous and outgoing demeanor was a foil for Kagami’s quiet, calm and introverted attitude. However, the two were friends in their own ways—though you wouldn’t have known from the way they spoke. “…skimping classes again?” “No…for once. We’re going to get dispatched. Heard it’s gonna be somewhere exotic.” Kagami snorted. Fat Chance. For acolytes, being dispatched meant having to hand out toys to ungrateful little children, doing chores that anyone else would consider child labor, and the like. The chances of being stationed outside of the island were…rare. However, Kagami tagged along as Mizuki talked out loud, causing disapproving glances from older students as they studied. They burst into the office of Pontifex Mei Hakura, the representative for the Quincy and also the head of the military wing of the Order of Saint Justica. “As loud as always, eh?” Compared to the others, she was the most cheerful of the four cardinals and the Quincy. “Well, now…you two are probably wondering whose village will you collect trash for.” Mizuki slumped in disappointment. However, Mei was grinning widely. “No need to worry…you’re going to the village of Sound as reconnaissance. Currently, we’ve heard rumors of some nightmare creature or something of the sort…but half of these reports are kind of unfounded, so…you two are dispatched to find out the truth behind this.” Mizuki stuck her tongue out at Kagami. “I told you it would be exotic!” Kagami nodded…but she had trouble concealing the grin tugging at her face.
Chapter 2
Recorded Conversation, Uchiha Military Police HQ
S. Uchiha: Are you sure there is absolutely no chance that Orochimaru had a child? Because Suigetsu once told me he had seen a baby with flaming hair—and he said that she reminded him completely of a snake, and even he shivered.

N. Hyuuga: How would a child be able to escape the complex fortress of Orochimaru? We sent a unit of Hyuuga to check out after a week…we almost burned our eyes out with Byukagan. There was absolutely nothing there.

S. Uchiha: I hope to god you’re right.

Village of Sound

“Dammit, quit running off, Mizuki.” Sound was a bustling trade town, and even the white-and-blue robes of the knights of the order did not look unusual compared to the red, blue and green of Konoha shinobi, the sand cloaks of the shinobi of the country of the wind, and the black Hakama that some people believed represented a secret police kind of group called the Shinigami. Kagami had trouble keeping up as Mizuki toured the shops, pretty soon spending ½ her monthly salary on what were probably useless things. Kagami, on the other hand, went into the pub. Her (comparably) gaudy clothing caught the eye of some of the rather foul-smelling men and also many leers. “Want a drink?” Kagami turned and simply stared back at the man. His leer faltered, and then he backed down. “Sorry, there…” Mizuki laughed. “Using your death-ray eyes again?” Since she could last remember (back to when she was three, when Will had found her—anything before was a blur), she was capable of somehow striking fear into others with a stare. Mizuki had cheerfully dubbed it “Insane dagger eyes of death”. In any case, she sat down and begun striking up a conversation with the bartender. It started innocently enough.
“How’s business here?”
“Good…but it used to be way better.”
“What do you mean?”
The barkeep gestured. “Didn’t you hear? There’ve been sightings of the Akatsuki.”
“The Akatsuki?”
“Yeah…several people are dead, and there’ve been eyewitness reports.”
“But…haven’t the Akatsuki been dead for 14 years?”
“Yeah , I know, but…” the bartender shrugged. “I don’t know…I just don’t know.”

However, before the conversation could advance further, someone walked up to them. “So we’re not the only ones Sound hired to confront this problem, eh?” Kagami turned and stared—straight into a pair of white-irised eyes. A Hyuuga… She looked at the man. White robe, long, black hair—could it be the famous… “Hyuuga Neji, Konoha.” Hyuuga Neji was a war hero in the fight against Akatsuki—he had been one of the ten former genin who had managed to defeat that group—but which was now being sighted today. Kagami shook Neji’s proffered hand. “Kagami and Mizuki Fujibayashi, Order of St. Justica.” Behind Neji, a woman stepped forwards—her hair in two round buns and a grey cloak over an almost birght pink chinese shirt. “This is my wife, Tenten.” Kagami shook her hand too. Two of what most historians consider the greatest generation…this is really serious, isn’t it. Neji looked outside. “Well…you should know that Sound’s protection council has summoned us.” Kagami nodded and they walked outside—right into a running battle. A group of Sound shinobi were assaulting what looked like a mob of eight or nine people—but they were responding well, and fireballs ripped through Zankuha Gauntlets and striking the Sound-nin. Mizuki smiled. “Finally, a good fight.” She suddenly spun a small glittering object that fell into her hand—a Quincy Cross. Every member of the order had their own weapon, specially designed to their specifications. Most chose the staff, due to its nonoffensive abilities and its assistance in magic and healing, but Kagami had chosen another weapon. She pulled her robe sleeves back, revealing a hand wrapped with chains. As if on their own, they unraveled, revealing on each hand a chain, tipped at the end with a clawed hook. Kagami either used the sword or her two Kusarihebi (Snake chain). Twirling them, she moved in, one of the chains shooting out at one of the men—but he—was it even a human? It’s face was blue—swung a giant wrapped blade, blocking the claw. Twirling her two chains, the two claws wrapped around the bandaged sword, restraining it—but the man suddenly, with strength beyond compare, suddenly swung, sending her into a brick wall. She smashed through, and the man closed in—but somebody suddenly grabbed onto her robe, hauling her into an alley. “You shouldn’t just leap into battles like that.” Kagami looked at the person who ahd saved her—a rather cheeky—looking young man, with long, blonde hair tied in an effeminate pigtail. However, he was undoubtedly good-looking. Kagami flushed. “I could have got out of it myself.” “But you didn’t, did ya?” Kagami glared angrily—and met with no cowered response. “Don’t look at me like that…well, don’t expect me to help you next time.” Kagami huffed angrily. “I wasn’t expecting it in the first place.” The boy smirked—and then disappeared.

Chapter 3

What drives humankind, the most foolhardy race, to
do such mad thins such as war and destruction?
Part of it is the fact that all humans since Adam are imperfect…
But it is also two great feelings; Love and Fear.
Both of these drive people past the limits of common sense.
Therefore, love, but with full expectation of disappointment.
Fear, but with full understanding that it is not in control of your life.

Saint Orun, Leader of the
Knights of St. Justica

Indeed, the group assembled was large—ninja from several different villages. Dressed in long flowing green robes, the Hakura of Glacier mingled with the green and blue of Konoha-nin. Sand cloaks of Suna and the tribal fur coats of Grass mixed. Finally, the council rapped the table. Consisting of survivors of the great war, the council ruled the village of sound—a system that the Kage of other countries had never really endorsed. But now that there’s money in the deal…they all flock together…Ninja are such greedy fools… Mizuki was cheerfully bantering with a Glacier-nin, and finally the council started up. “Ninja from all around the world…I know many of you have heard of the Akatsuki in legend only—the people who, when you were children, your parents said would come out if you didn’t go to bed and eat you. They are the stuff of nightmares—their leader, Pain, and all the others—Uchiha Itachi, Kisame Hoshigake, Sasori, Zetsu…they are all people whose deaths we are glad of. However, it apparently is not true.” The bearded shinobi looked at all of them. “We have had hundreds of eyewitness accounts—and hundreds of deaths. The Akatsuki are only making a token effort of hiding their presence—this council has already lost two members,” he said, indicating two empty chairs. “Akatsuki MUST BE TRACKED DOWN AN DESTROYED. The Council will grant 8,000,000 Ryo to the one who accomplishes this. Good luck.” He waved for the meeting to be over. Mizuki ran up next to Kagami. “That was fast…” Kagami nodded. Mizuki, though was almost bouncing off the walls. “Guess what?” “hm?” “We’ll be staying with the Ninja Genin…this will be ssoooo totalleeee aaaaawesome…” She walked off cheerfully as Kagami tagged along. Suddenly, a rather boyishly handsome black haired boy in the robes of the Hakura walked up to Kagami. “’scuse me….what’s the name of that girl you just talked with?” Kagami stared at him. “Mizuki Fujibayashi.” The boy nodded. “Thanks.” Kagami smiled slightly. looks like she’s got a suitor…She turned to a Konoha boy. “Who is that cocky guy in the green robe?” The boy smiled. “You’re interested in him too? Sometimes he’s so good looking I bet even some men love him. He’s Kirei Hakura—the scion of the Hakura house and genius boy galore.” He laughed bitterly. “Every girl loves him…and I can’t blame them. He’s good looking, well-mannered, and he’s already a Chuunin…” He whistled wistfully and offered a hand to Kagami. “I’m Hasashi Uchiha, by the way.” Kagami shook it. “Good luck finding those people…tell you the truth, they creep me out.”

Cathedral of St. Justica

Cardinal Kohaku Kaguya knelt in the cold stone floor of the citadel. Through the giant stained glass window, moonlight shone through the shape of a sword, its hilt and guard length marginally increased to resemble that of an old, cracked sword, intertwined with an olive vine—the symbol of the Order. He had always come here when he was troubled—the solitude and comforting silence had always endeared itself to him. Behind him, Bishop Will Harkins walked up to him. “Is Kagami Okay?” Kohaku stretched out with his mind, searching for the reassuring chakra signature. “She’s fine, my son” Will sighed with relief. However, his brow was still furrowed with worry. “We’ve looked up her past…do you think it is safe…?” Kohaku sighed. “There is no absolute chance of success… ‘for every happy ending…’” “’there is always at least another unhappy ending,’” Kohaku finished. “Yes…I have thrown Kagami into a test…we have fired the arrow, let us pray that it will strike its mark. But perhaps…it may need some help in his flight. If you wish, go and help your adopted sister…may saint Justica be with you.”

Medical Report 25d3
Subject Name: Kagami
Age: 4
Guardian: William Lloyd Harkins
Gender: Female
Birth Date: Unknown
Report: Yesterday, at 9:23 AM, the subject had been arguing with another boy, and the boy had finally pushed the subject to the ground in rage. Instantly, a red, glowing mark formed on the subject’s shoulder, burning a hole through the tunic and sending a glowing red band through the forehead. The child began to speak in the vocabulary of at least an advanced 14 year old, and then attacked the boy viciously, leaving a broken rib and a bruised face. However, soon after the subject passed out. When she awoke, she had no apparent recollection of the event. The memories of both were wiped. Research division suggests that this may be some kind of curse seal, possibly to the Akatsuki Era.

Two days later, night

After the exciting beginning, the days changed into a monotony of patrol after patrol. This is so boring… Mizuki watched the crowds pass. nothing happens at all… She twirled her quincy cross, a german-style Iron Cross. The only thing left from my family… However, she had never known them—they were only a faraway memory, seen only in dreams—the scent of dandelions, Brown hair—but they were too distant for her to remember. I wonder who Kagami’s parents were… Suddenly, her muscles tensed as she heard a sound. She turned—but there was no need to do it quickly—the target walked forwards without any attempt at hiding, shouldering a giant sword seemingly made out of scales. Mizuki recognized it. Hoshigaki Kisame! She drew her own weapon, a naginata with an abnormally long blade. “You are one of the Akatsuki?” Kisame shrugged. “What if I am?” Mizuki confidently fell into the Djem So position. “Then we must fight.” Kisame shrugged. “You’re just a little minnow in the pool…go ahead.” Mizuki leapt forwards. “Hirenkyaku!

Kagami, who knew Mizuki’s Reiatsu by instinct, noticed the spike in activity first. “There’s a fight.” She quickly stood up. Kirei and Hasashi, who had been dozing off, suddenly rose up, following her. They rushed down to the streets—but the fighting was already over. Mizuki felt the warmth of her own blood spread across the floor, as the warmth inside of her body left through the red stain on her robe. Her naginata, broken, lay nearby, shattered in a single hit. How…did he… “Weren’t you awfully cocky when this fight started? And to think I actually took you seriously. Well, I Guess it’s goodnight, then.” He raised his sword… “Dokugiri!” Kisame suddenly turned as a giant cloud of poison gas billowed into him, and something shot past him. Kirei Hakura slid past, forming handseals with his hands. “Hyoton: Tsubame Fubuki (Ice Release: Swallow Snow Storm)!” Thousands of shards of Ice shot at Kisame, but he swung Sameheda, shattering the ice like glass. Nearby, Hasashi leapt from above. “Katon: Hosenka no Jutsu (Fire Style - Art of the Phoenix Flower, the Touch-me-not)!” Several fireballs shot at Kisame, who folded his own hands. “Suiton: Suigadan (Water Release: Water Fang Bullet)!” A bolt of water put out each fireball—revealing three shuriken. Kisame merely turned his head, and the Shuriken shot past, coming around—suddenly, the shuriken changed back into Kagami, who lashed out with Kusarihebi. Kisame turned in surprise as it shot past him—and then drew back, drawing a bloody furrow across his robe. However, he lashed out, slashing Kagami. She felt her arm rip as a whole piece of skin and robe flew off. Kisame then threw his blade. Spinning in the air, it slashed like a shuriken, forcing Hasashi to avoid the slash mid-justsu. Kirei turned. “Hakura bloodline Jutsu: Vine Arm!” Vines suddenly erupted from his arms, creating a shield—and Sameheda crashed in, doing damage, but finally coming to rest. Kaoru dove for the blade, grabbing it—but the scales instantly separated, reforming in Kisame’s hand. “Nice try, Kid…” He suddenly swung down, shattering the shield. Kirei drew his own sword, blocking it—but he, too was slammed into a wall. Kisame closed in—and then he turned again. “Damn it, why do people keep interrupting my kills?” “Surrender your weapon, in the name of the Knights of Saint Justica!” Will Harkins walked into the light of the streetlamps. Nearby, Tenten and Hyuuga Neji also stepped out. “Well, good try, you three…you can step down for now and take care of Mizuki.” Will motioned to Kagami, who quickly hastened to Mizuki. Neji, Tenten and Will moved close, each prepareing themselves—Neji with his bare hands, Tenten with a large scroll and Will with his Black staff. Then they all moved in, Tenten with a long Iron staff, both she and Will moving in Tandem to cover their weaknesses. Neji also moved in, striking out. However, Kisame was no normal opponent, swinging in a Shii Cho position to counter both Will’s Soresu and Tenten’s Ataro as well as blocking Neji’s strikes. Will turned to the other two. “Cover me.” Instantly, Tenten spun her scroll, sending a hail of Kunai. Will continued reading. “…Oh Lord of the heavens, grant me only a small portion of your power, to cleanse the darkness. In victory, our chains are broken—Luce!” Instantly, the sky seemed to brighten—and then blasts of light rained down, striking at Kisame, who blocked iwht his blade—but Neji was already behind him. “Eight Trigrams: 256 strike!” Kisame jerked back as each of his chakra points were pierced—and the Tenten drew back a sword that had suddenly appeared in her hand, stabbing it right through. Kisame slumped over. Tenten looked at him. “Something’s odd about this one…when he fought him, his sword was capable of cutting off chakra, and he was much smarter htan this one…what the hell is going on?”

(XD PM ME, don't post here for god's sakes! I meant, for only one example, when he talked about the rings. He merely swapped off Orochimaru, Deidara and the otehr name and changed some words around--before I start any anime, I usually look it up on wikipedia, so some I know almost by heart. BTW your friend is bad writer, no offense ot her.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akatsuki
Quote :
Each Akatsuki member wears a single, unique ring, and no two members wear a ring on the same finger. In total, there are ten rings, and each seems to have some special significance; Tobi believes that he can become a member after finding Sasori's ring,[7] and although Zetsu claims it's not as easy as that, Tobi does indeed become a member. Deidara reinforces the significance of the rings when, after losing both his arms, he expresses more concern for finding the ring than finding the arm itself.[8] Likewise, when Orochimaru leaves the organization he takes his ring with him, and in the ten years since then[9] he has yet to be replaced. Each ring bears a unique symbol, the first kanji of its name.

Chapter 5

The Darker the Shadow, the Brighter the light that cast it.
Light cannot exist without shadow, Yin without Yang.

Hakura Proverb

Kagami sipped her cup of hot water outside the hospital room. Kirei was pacing nervously. Kagami looked over at Kirei. “You worry about her quite a lot, don’t you?” Kirei was caught off guard. He stuttered, his face red. “W-well, it’s not like that…” Kagami looked him straight in the eye. “What do you see in her?” Kirei laughed nervously. “Well, nothing actually…” He grew serious. “As you know, I’m the heir of the Hakura Family…and people expect a lot of me. And while I shouldn’t be a braggart, I’ve met most of these—and most other people my age treat me almost like a god…it’s so much damn respect. You can see they’re just trying to suck up…but Mizuki didn’t care. She treats me like a regular human being.” Before he could speak further, the doctor came out. They both stared at him eagerly. “Yes, your friend will live…it was mostly flesh wounds, albeit deep ones…but her left arm’s been badly damaged, she’ll need to keep it in a cast.” Kagami stood up. “Can we see her, then?” the doctor nodded and walked off. The two entered the room—the doctor had put a optimistic, if honest, view on things. Mizuki was breathing, and she seemed alright—her forehead was wrapped in a bandage, and she was, indeed, wearing a cast, but she looked extremely weary. Her eyes opened a crack as they came in. She smiled thinly but cheerfully. “Well, it could have been worse…” Kagami sat down on the bed. “Are you okay?” “Well…not really, that guy messed me up pretty bad, eh?” Kagami nodded. “We lost badly…” The three sat in silence. The tension was cancelled by Hasashi running in. “Is everyone alright?” Kirei sighed. “Yes…” “So…you’re going back to the church, Mizuki?” Mizuki turned sharply. “What?” “Well…you can’t use your left hand, and it’s impossible to use your naginata or magic one-handed…” Mizuki glared at Kagami. “Of course not…I’ll find a way t odo without magic OR my Naginata…but first, I need some sleep” Kagami dind’t try to stop her—when she was set in something, Mizuki wouldn’t let go of it until she was completely done, and until then, nothing would deter her forever. “Well, good night then…” As soon as The others had left, though, Mizuki opened her eyes a crack and looked at the sword she had in her knapsack. time to start training…

“Preliminary reports suggested that the Akatsuki defeated 14 years ago have been revived…we now know this is untrue.” Will Harkins turned on a video projector, and a grainy screen of light played out. “This was taken by one of our operatives when the unit was fighting the Akatsuki known as Zetsu—we won, but all over, people who have fought the Akatsuki before have noticed significant abnormalities. For one thing, this Zetsu was stronger than the Zetsu that Konoha had fought in some areas, while in some it didn’t exist. The same with some others whom we have fought—at the moment, there are still several Akatsuki members remaining. Pertaining from the conversations between some members, their leader is still the enigmatic man known as ‘Pain’, but he has not shown himself yet. Others include Uchiha Itachi, the feared Uchiha; Sasori, the first Akatsuki to die; and Hidan and Kakuzu, who killed 8 squads (23 ninja) of Sound-nin before leaving. We need to find them…and Hidan is said to be immortal. Any questions?” A Sound ninja stood up. “How do we kill something we can’t kill?” Will looked him in the eye. “Death is the least of the things the Burial Agency can do.” There was an instant titter of disbelief and awe, but the meeting was over, and Will walked down the hall. Nearby, a man dressed in black walked up to him. “Bishop William Harkins?” “That would be my name.” “We’ve called the Other World.” The Other world? Is it that serious? The Other World was the name given to the world that the Church had come from—it was far more advanced technologically and had refined its magic to incoporate several styles. The Other World Only infrequently contacted this world. This is serious, isn’t it… “We will give you any information we find on these. Good evening.” And then the man was gone.

Kagami walked outside of the hospital. To be honest, it had not been all that interesting. Mizuki had pretty much slept the whole time. She turned—and saw the boy who had saved her looking at the moon on the roof, unaware of her presence. She jumped behind him. “What’re you looking at?” The boy didn’t even bother to turn around. “The moon. It’s so pretty…” Kagami looked at him. “You mean you’ve never seen the moon before?” “Well…no…not that I can remember.” “What od you mean?” “…Well, I don’t really remember much…just suddenly being…well…here. I guess I lost my memory somehow…fell a bit to ofar from a rooftop, got hit by a bucket, something… but I’ll regain it eventually.” He seemed so confident Kagami hoped he was right—because if not, his fall to hopelessness would be a long way down. “So where do you live?” The boy pointed at the roof where he was sitting. “Here.” “Wha…you mean you don’t have a house?” “Uhh…no.” “Do you want to stay with me?” He shrugged. “Why not?” He landed solidly on the ground. Kagami blushed. “Keep in mind I’m only doing this because I’d feel bad with you having no place to stay.” The boy nodded. Kagami suddenly turned. “Hey, I never really asked…what’s your name?” “Deidara.” Have I heard that name before? Another voice spoke up behind them. "That's sweet."

Chapter 6

We are the knights of God. It is our duty to kill.
However, we will not do this out of hate.
We will not do it out of anger. Emotions
Muddle the judgement of even the most clear-minded.
Do not hate your enemy—be glad for them, for if you win, they will be in the kingdom of heaven.
If you lose, then you will be in the kingdom of heaven.

Kagami turned as the claw shot towards her—and then someone landed in front of her, blocking the claw with a familiar staff. “Watch it, Kagami!” Instantly, her two Kusarihebi unfurled as she turned—toward the most monstrous thing she had seen in her life. It had what used to be human skin, but was a hunchbacked, ugly kind of thing. “This is Hiruko…and the three of you are in my way.” Deidara stepped forwards—but with a flick of the tail, he was sent flying, crashing into a pole. He slid down, unconscious. Will held his staff expertly ,charging in. However, he was forced to dodge and backflip as needles, knives, arms and the tail all shot at him from different directions. This person can hold back Will that easily…Will is the master at stave combat, and he’s still being kept from doing damage! jerking the chain with her fingers, Kuarihebi shot from her sleeves, clawing at Hiruko and punching a hole in the armor. She pulled, but the thing was too heavy. Will leapt in to help, but Hiruko’s tail slammed into Will’s stomach, also flinging him to the ground. Kagami retracted her Kusarihebi, drawing her thin sword instead in the Ataro stance. Leaping over Hiruko, she came up from behind and slashed, cutting a hole in Hiruko—but it forced her to block as a knife appendage shot out. Several wire-guided Kunai entangled her sword. She tried to hold on, but it was yanked out of her hand, clattering into the ground uselessly. The many appendages all drew back at once, plunging. Kagami closed her eyes…

A single drop of something fell onto Kagami’s face. She opened her eyes slowly and dabbed it. Blood? She looked up—Will stood over her, many blades and needles extending out of his front. He smiled, blood dripping from his mouth. “Sorry…there…” Then he fell over, his body still warm. Hiruko looked at the body idly. “Pointless…he merely changed the order of death…why would he do this kind of thing? Really…it is something of a conundrum…such idiocy, for such an idiot…” “I’m not an idiot.” Hiruko suddenly paused. There was something glowing—and then Kagami stood up. A band of Glowing Red was on her forehead like a headband, and her robe sleeves also glowed in several thick red glowing bands. Hiruko moved back—I’ve seen this before… and suddenly she was right in front of him. Suddenly, she opened her mouth—and a snake extended, and out of the snake’s mouth—Hiruko’s eyes widened as the sword entered his forehead, cracking it—and revealing his true nature. Sasori brushed aside the wreckage of Hiruko. “I’m sorry for hiding that time…it IS a bit rude. My name is Sasori.” Kagami laughed. “That was a nice puppet…I think your head would look nice shattered, wouldn’t it? Kusanagi no Tsurugi: Kusanagi, long sword of the heavens!” Instantly, the sword lengthened, shooting at Sasori, who parried it with his arm. “Nothing’s THAT simple.” Suddenly, something circled Sasori’s leg. He looked down—Snakes?! Kagami smiled maniacally. “Is it?” Sasori’s eyes widened as he desperately parried strike after strike—and suddenly his hand came off. dammit, how the hell did she have this much speed?! He whipped out a scroll. Kagami stepped back in surprise—and suddenly, something heavy hit her head—and tehn another, and another—sand that bonded together in an instant. In moments, only her head was visible. She struggled for am oment—and then she succumbed to the pressure. “Orochimaru’s curse mark…I’ve seen ti before…” He prepared to activate the Sand coffin technique—and then turned as five small bullet-like things hit his chest. As soon as he turned, another broadside struck him. “Good evening.” Cardinal Kohaku Kaguya strode in, flanked on both sides by two black-robed figures. Sasori stared. “And you are?” “Kohaku Kaguya, 2nd Cardinal of the Holy Order of Saint Justica.” “What’s your business.” “Well, that’s a student of mine you got there…so I got to do something about it. Prepare yourself.” Almost instantly, he reappeared in front of him. “Yanagi no Mai—Dance of the willow! Sasori leapt back as two meter-long white spikes shot over his head. He suddenly swung a sword he had plucked out of his shoulder, crossing swords with Kohaku’s. However, it was pointless. Sasori was slowly driven back, even with his doll. Finally, Kohaku closed in close enough for an unavoidable strike. “Tessenka no Mai: Hana! (Dance of the Clematis: flower)” Suddenly, a giant spear of bone formed on Kohaku’s arm as he stabbed with the signature Djem So flourish. Sasori’s eye widened—the blast stabbed him through the lower chest. He looked at it—and then jumped aside. “I guess I can’t win this…I may as well elave now.” He disappeared, grabbing Will’s body. The two black order exorcists prepared to follow, but Kohaku held up a hand. “First we need to tend to the wounded.”

Chapter 7

Betrayal—it is one of the strongest insults
in military life. And yet, it occurs so often.

Jan Hakura I, founder of House Hakura

“Morning.” Mizuki grinned from her bed as Kagami looked around. The first thing Kagami felt was a pain in her forehead. “What happene…wait, is Will alright?” Mizuki turned away. “…I’m sorry, Kagami.” The first thing that hit her was indescribable grief—the vacuum left by the removal of a soul that had been a pivotal part of the other. Then she knew who did it. That Akatsuki…and he’s still alive! Rage coursed through her—and suddenly, her arms glowed, to the shock of Mizuki. “What the—” However, it faded in moments. Wasn’t that the thing that increased my speed? She tried again—but nothing happened. She thought of an angry thought—and the arms glowed. Finally, she closed her eyes. alright, so Anger powers this…but isn’t it wrong to do something like this? One side of her brain tried to rationalize.
I can’t win without it.
Doesn’t the order say not to hate?
Yes…but this is righteous hate…the hate of evil.

Kagami closed her eyes and remembered Sasori’s amused eyes and Will’s face—and like a fountain, her rage welled up. This time, the comforting glow did not fade, forming several glowing bands around her arms. And suddenly, memories rushed to her that were not hers—forgotten techniques, movements. And in that moment, she knew she could win.

Mizuki gritted her teeth as she fought a wood-clone copy of herself Kohaku had lent her. Dammit, Kagami’s only gotten stronger, and I still can’t do a thing. It’s almost impossible to win one-handed…I’m not used to this! “How are things doing?” Kohaku and Kirei waved as they entered. “Well…not so good. Djem So involves solid power…fighting with one hand makes learning Makashi really difficult.” Kirei shuffled his feet nervously. “Well, I have a bit of experience with Djem So, so do you think we could…err…well…train together?” Kohaku smiled. “I’ll train both of you.” Mizuki nodded vigorously. “Thank you, Father Kohaku (in monastries, the bishop is usually referred as “father”)” Kohaku paced in a circle around the garden. “However, it may not be safe to train here, so, only temporarily, do you mind if we train in the south instead of what amounts to a war zone?” Mizuki thought aobut it. Well, I hate having to leave Kagami to do this….but I can’t do anything until I’m ready… “Fine.”

Kagami closed her eyes and suddenly extended her hands. Instantly, three snakes shot out of her sleeves, snapping at anything happened to be nearby. Well, I’ve gotten the hang of most of this…She thrust her hand into the ground, at which a snake came out of the ground, spitting out the sword she had used yesterday. Kusanagi…the long sword of the heavens…She swung it—and then she heard voices outside. Quickly sheathing the sword at her side, she swiped a glass tumbler, putting it to the wall and putting her ear to it. Amplified, she could hear the voices—her eyes widened as she heard Deidara’s voice.
“You could have killed her.”
A surly voice—one that had been muffled by a certain suit before but was obviously Sasori’s spoke.
“She would have been a good addition to my collection.”
“Absolutely not, Master.”
“…Deidara, are you growing a conscience? We’re in this for money, not for anything else.”
The voice of Deidara sputtered. “I didn’t join Akatsuki for money, I joined it for my art!”
Sasori’s voice assumed a silky tone. “You will have ample time to do your art…do not allow yourself to be attached to anyone…because all the good women are our enemies, and chances are you will find yourself forced to kill them.”
“…Yes, master.”
“Deidara.”
“Yes?”
“Don’t fall in love with men either.”
Kagami tightened her grip on her sword and tried to keep calm, as something shot past, leaving the silhouette of Deidara walked towards the gate where Kagami was hiding. She stepped in front, swinging her sword right in front of his face. “Wha-” “Give me a reason not to kill you, ,like you were about to kill us. You’ve been lying to all of us, you filthy traitor! You’re working with Akatsuki!” Deidara held up his hands. “Fine. I do not deny I was working with Akatsuki. However, I was not about to kill any of you.” “Why should I believe you?” Deidara untied his knapsack and weapon pouch. Clinking, kunai, shuriken, wires and needles spilled out, and the knapsack fell with a dull thump. “I’m unarmed now. Now will you hear me out?” Kagami nodded grimly. “Alright, speak.” “I was indeed created with the rest of the Akatsuki with no memory but of my objective. How, I do not know…but Pain believes that we were reborn. Indeed, I worked with Akatsuki for its objective—to become a mercenary country. However…they are fools, corrupted by their own minds. Pain apparently believes that he can stop war with war by showing others its pointlessness…that is just madness. The idea is to create peace…and that cannot be done through the human mind. In history, only the victors can inscribe what they say is “peace”. The loser, regardless of how noble their intentions, will never do what they can do…therefore, we need to unite this world, under a common flag. Look around…every country with their own flag, in their own petty feuds…we need to end this, and bring happiness to everyone. But to do that, we msut kill the minority for the Majority…and the Akatsuki is part of this minority. I can work from the inside, and you from the outside…but please do not tell the church…their ideals once were as pure…but over time, their methods have corrupted them…their turning to what they hope is conciliation.” Kagami thought about it. “How can I trust you?” Deidara stared back levelly. “You can’t…but I must continue acting like normal every day…it will not be difficult to reveal me.” Kagami nodded. “I still don’t believe you…but I’ll go with this.” Deidara nodded and turned to leave—and then he said one more thing. “Sasori will attack the council building at 9 o’clock PM. Go. You have nothing to lose.” Kagami turned, and then Deidara sputtered, blushing, and continued walking.

Mizuki turned from the window. She had been packing her bags when she had seen the two in the lamplight talking. So Kagami has been talking with the Akatsuki? Should I tell someone?

Chapter 8

Love is a medicine in varying strength. It can dull blades, but can also sharpen them. However, in many cases, love is as insubstantial as the petals of a cherry blossom—they are beautiful, yet a strong wind will cause them to fall in droves. However, there is one type of love, which clings on—which lasts in any storm, like a vine. Those that are heir to this love are the blessed of the blessed. And yet they are cursed—for this love will likely send both to their graves.

Saint Elimine,
Founder of the Church of St. Elimine

The three council members were already hiding their fear. “Why do we need to be the bait for this?” Kagami glared at him. “Because we need to make it appear as if we do not know what is happening. We need to do this without the cardinal.” Anotehr was sobbing. “I’m too young to die…” Kagami looked at them in disgust. These council members—who seemed so strong when they gave orders, who were so authoritative when they had the money behind their backs, theyr’e totally worthless wimps without their mercenaries and troops…this whole council is corrupted. Finally, one man stood up. “I can’t take this anymore…I have children to take care of…I’ll pay you your money if you let me out.” Kagami turned. “So you will pay us in full?” “Y-yes!” Kagami crossed the room in one stride and slapped him across the face. “What kind of role model are you?! Are you here for your own good or to defend your families?! Now SIT DOWN.” However, at that moment, there were yells as several Sound crossbowmen stationed outside fired. However, there were several deep booms, and then the door slammed open as a soldier was thrown through. Kagami put on her radio. “Now!” Instantly, Exorcists, Church Executors and Sound-nin let fire. Suddenly, though, Sasori spun a scroll, as more than a hundred different puppets charged through—and were caught in a hailstorm of Kunai, shuriken, fireballs, crossbow shots and energy attacks of various size, speed and power. Kagami’s Kusarihebi ripped through the strings of two as she leapt in, drawing Kusanagi—and the dust cleared. Many of the dolls had been defeated in the blasts, but there were probably 45% of the remainder still alive, and they rushed into the positions, slashing and stabbing with poisoned blades and projectiles. The black robes of the Black Order and Executors were in stark contrast with the white cloaks and armor of the order of St. Justica as they also went in. Kagami saw something heading for the roof, and she leapt after it—“We meet again, Kagami.” Sasori stood with what looked like a wrapped cocoon. “That another puppet?” “Naturally…but you mind find the face a bit on the familiar side…” He pulled it apart—“Will?!” Sasori grinned. “Your teacher seemed to have a pretty high stamina, so I decided to…add him to my collection. You should be pretty honored…” “SHUT THE F*** UP!” Kagami leapt forwards, sending Kusanagi at Sasori. However, with a familiar swing of the stave, the puppet of Will blocked the hit, knocking it aside and forcing Kagami to retract her blade. Suddenly, though, Kagami shot past with a burst of chakra from her feet, striking at Sasori, who stepped back as a hit struck his shoulder, doing no visible damage. “You were stronger last time,” remarked Sasori—and then he realized his arm wasn’t working. “What the…?” Kagami tried to finish the slash, but suddenly leap aside as once again several tiny pieces of sand shot at her. “Futon: Daitoppa (Wind Release: Great Breakthrough)” The blast of wind blew the blasts off track as the third Kazekage doll landed. Suddenly, Will shot up behind her, swinging his staff. Kagami leapt over it and once again tried to charge Sasori, but he had been waiting. “Satetsu Kaiho (Iron Sand World Order)” Thousands of spikes of Iron Sand shot at Kagami. Suddenly, though, Kagami responded with her own handseals. “Nan no Kaizo (Soft Physique Modification)” Suddenly elongating, Kagami curled around the spikes, suddenly extending towards Sasori—and then thousands of blasts of light rained down. Luce—Will’s signature technique. She tried to block with Kusanagi, but her elongated body meant that she could not dodge all the blasts. She was sent rolling on the roof, coming to rest near the edge. She spun Kusanagi around—just as Will flew at her. Unthinkingly, she cut the puppet apart—just as a single needle shot out of the mouth, hitting her shoulder—A poisoned needle!/I] Sasori walked over. “…You lost. Every blade I have is poisoned…that of your teacher’s is with paralysis—you should be totally unable to move or breathe in less than a minute…but dying like that is rather painful, so I’ll give you the service of a faster death. Satetsu Shigure (Iron Sand Drizzle)” The many bullets of poisoned iron sand shot, completely covering the area of the hit, sending up a cloud of rubble and dust. He turned to go—and suddenly was aware of something shooting at him. He turned aside as something sand-colored flew at him—a bird. He quickly had the third Kazekage puppet knock it aside. Wait a minute, a clay bird… Deidara felt the poisoned sand stinging in his chest as he looked at the Clay turtle that he had used to block the blast. “Wow, you even got through there…” Sasori’s face distorted. “Deidara, what the hell are you doing?” Deidara grinned painfully. “Well, I decided that since most good women were against Akatsuki…well, that takes out the point of joining, right?” “…So you’ll die for this woman?” However, Kagami struggled up. “Not really. Hidden Snake hand!” Instantly, a snake bit both Kagami’s arm and Deidara’s to his shock. “Whoa there, whoa there, dying from venom is fine, but easy with that snake…” Kagami glared. “Shut up…I’m having the snakes pull out the venom.” She drew back Kusanagi as Deidara clapped his hands—the third Kazekage puppet suddenly exploded. “I included small bits of my exploding clay in the snad when you destroyed my bird…now, master, you’re next.” Kagami suddenly slashed. “jigoku no Daija (Snakes of Hell): Kusanagi!” Instantly, thousands of transparent snakes of white energy shot at him, burning through his body—and then the blade entered Sasori’s chest, at the small compartment that housed one of the few living portions of himself—his heart. As he fell, he smiled slightly. I just got betrayed, and then defeated…so why…am I…not…angry? And then he fell, no longer anything but a mess of organic fluids, wood and string.

Chapter 9

There may be times that two evils are just as terrible, and one
is forced to choose two. It is cruel to leave this choice to others,
and yet it is cruel to choose yourself. When the time comes, these
decisions reflect the state of one’s soul.

Saint Justica

“What?!” Kagami and the other shinobi looked in outrage at the council members. “Because you endangered the lives of the council members, your reward will be lowered to 20%. Consider yourselves lucky you have not been prosecuted…” With surly murmurs, many of the shinobi prepared to go. Hasashi and Kagami were especially incensed. Hasashi was employing every foul word he knew liberally. “Those f***’in sons of b*tches, they called us over and then lower the bounty…they don’t even risk their own motherf*cking necks! Well eat their @$$es!” Kagami sighed. “I’m sorry…I guess it was my fault…” However, deep inside, she was smoldering like the rest of them. Corrupt politicians…if Only I could clean up these *ssholes…Deidara was waiting outside. “How was it?” Kagami pushed him into an alley. “Don’t just show your face like that…” Deidara grinned. “Calm down. But really…those bastards.” Just then, though, an older Order of St. Justica Acolyte walked up to her. “Head over to the church…we’ve determined the source of the Akatsuki.”

“The Night of Wallachia.” The apparent impact supposed to have been made never materialized as the Black Order Clergyman from the homeworld looked around. He took out a sheaf of documents. “The Night of Wallachia is a dead apostle, thus part of the Vampire subdivision, a type of demon. The Night of Wallachia was once a Magus of the Eltnam clan in the Atlas Alchemy Division. However, Wallachia eventually concluded there is no absolute predictable result but destruction. He was driven mad by this and thus made a pact to become a dead apostle with Altouge Brunestud, the queen of the Dead Apostles and True Ancestors. He now has no discernable form—but he will appear every fifty years (his first was his namesake, having taken the appearance of Count Dracula—his physical body was killed by the Exorcist Van Helsing), on several conditions. First, the place of appearance, in this case Sound, must be the source of a large amount of unfound rumours. The night of Wallachia will give physical manifestation to this—and so in this case it is the Akatsuki—and this also explains the discrepancies. Apparently, the Sound citizens have a TERRIBLE memory of the Akatsuki—and some they do not know of at all. So…we can confidently say that we do not know who we are fighting AT ALL apart from appearances.” A priest regarded the speaker. “So what can we do?” “…I believe that what we have here is not sufficient…we’ve called for more assistance from the Order and the churches all around here…we need to be ready.”

“Keep your guard up! Watch your legs!” Kohaku kept up a constant stream of advice as his wooden practice sword danced gracefully through Mizuki’s rough defense, striking her lightly time and again. Crap…Left…below… Mizuki’s desperate slash was knocked aside, the wooden sword spiraling in the air and falling to the ground. “Damn…” Kohaku smiled. “It could have been worse. How ‘bout we eat a bit?” Kirei, who had been watching and nursing his own wounds, sat down and the three started eating. “You know, both of you have learned very quickly…even though you’re still behind, you’ve trained what was equivalent to two years of training in two months.” Mizuki sighed. “I don’t know…of the six styles, none of htem really suit me…” Kirei thought about it. “Well, each style has its merits: Ataro, the most acrobatic; Djem So, the most solid; Soresu, the best defense; Niman, the blind style; Makashi, the elegant gentlemen’s style…Shii Cho, the two-handed style. Each has its natural weaknesses and strengths, but it all still require a base element of Arm strength…” Kohaku looked at the two. “Well, there’s actually a seventh style—but it is the most dangerous.” Mizuki stared at him. “What is it?” “Vaapad. It is powerful because it uses almost no strength, channeling the opponent’s chakra and strength through your own body and rerouting it. While this is powerful, if you mess up at all, it will directly damage your magic circuits (chakra paths).” Mizuki and Kirei craned forwards. “Can you teach us?” Kohaku considered it, frowning. “Yes, if you can master all the other styles.” Instantly, the two stood up. “Let’s get started then, dammit!”

The man who knew himself as Deidara sat on the roof. This village would have been a strong village—it’s well-concealed, well-protected and endowed with many resources…but with this style of government and such leaders, it’ll never reach its full potential… he spun a kunai. But what am I? Certainly not the true Deidara…I have some of his abilities, but I remember nothing of what I did, how I got them or how I even know how to use them…plus the fact that Deidara’s personality was supposedly different, according to the history book I read… He looked at his hand and robe. They’re perfectly real…and everybody can see me, but am I really just a ghost given a semihuman form? The thought was disturbing, but he closed his eyes. It doesn’t matter…if I am a ghost, then I am back for some reason…perhaps I can clean up this world…make a new dawn…Something landed behind him. “So…you’ve decided to desert our order?” A man in an Akatsuki robe walked forwards without any obvious attempt to protect himself. White-haired, he had the look of a proud priest you would find leading a crusade. However, the large, black scythe at his side dispelled any idea inclination to think that this man read the book of psalms everyday and played piano at your local Choir. “Hidan…so you people found out?” “Yes…nothing can go unnoticed past pain—and your betrayal has marked pretty high on the radar.” Deidara instantly flew into action, throwing two birds at Hidan, who swung his scythe, knocking them away, just as Deidara lashed out with his leg, catching Hidan on the head. Deidara heard the snapping, but Hidan’s leg came up to meet him, kickihg him back. Hidan carefully readjusted his spinal cord. “Easy there, easy there…it’s all fun and games until somebody loses his head.” Damn, I forgot he was invincible… He looked inside his pouch. Only enough for four small C1 bombs. I need mor clay. Grabbing a Kunai, he ran for Hidan—but Hidan had been expecting it, already keeping the scythe in ready position. However, Deidara’s hand closed on an unsheathed Fuuma Shuriken, unfurling it into a fan-like position, swinging it and taking Hidan’s head off. As Hidan’s body began to lurch around for its head, Deaidara quickly tied his small clay bird to the head as it flew away. “Damn you, We’ll catch up to you, you traitor…” Hidan’s Ranting faded into the night as the bird flew off—and tehn exploded, raining pieces of Hidan all over the town. Well, that’ll keep him occupied for now…stupid old monk guy…He hurried off. Now I’m an enemy to both sides…

Chapter 10

A god is only a god when there are none that can match his power.
When there are two gods, any advantages held by either are pointless.

Jan Hakura II, Grandson of Jan Hakura I

“Hellooooo, my deaaarries!” Kagami, Hasashi and most of the ninja in the eating hall snorted into their rice as a cheerful, boisterous voice shrilly called across. Mei Hakura, the 1st Cardinal of the Order of St. Justica had that way with most people—the ability to totally catch them off guard with her personality (which also happened to be the opposite of the behavior of the other three cardinals—Kohaku Kaguya, Isabelle De Luca and Lucius Harkins). Walking in and casually throwing her red Cardinal’s traveling cloak onto the head of a Cloud Bounty Hunter she looked around. “So what’s the problem again?” Patiently, everyone tried to explain in the best terms. But Mei seemed absorbed with one person specifically. “Has there been any mention of Itachi Uchiha?” “No, ma’am.” “Excellent…is Kirei around?” Kagami walked up to her. “Kirei Hakura?” “Yes…he’s my son, you know…did you see him?” “Yes…he and Mizuki left with Cardinal Kohaku for training.” “Pfft…Kohaku…he has no sense of fun whatsoever…he’d love to be holed up n a building just reading, exactly like De Luca…” Mei put down her cup of coffee (her 24th in the approximate space of 10 minutes) and looked around. “So…are there any leads on Itachi’s location?” “Ma’am, we’re not sure if he even exists…apparently, the people we spoke with had no mention of Tobi, the actual leader of Akatsuki—it appears he does not exist, the same might be the same with Itachi.” “Pfft…then I would have came for nothing…” She twirled the strange, barreled and hollow-ended weapon familiar to all members of the Hakura Main Line. Directly descended from Jan Hakura I, Mei Hakura was a heir to the genetic mystery known as “Pandora’s box”. Jan Hakura I had been born from a mix of Hakura, Shinigmami, Quincy, Bount, and numerous other bloodlines. As a result, genes mutated easily to endow traits that were sometimes self-destructive, sometimes powerful. However, there were some constants in the box—longevity and the capability of using both limited Quincy and Hakura powers. Each of them, though, used a strange weapon heard to be from the homeworld, the gun. Scientifically propelled by a mix of substances, the Hakura brand had traditionally been pistols, only recently becoming revolvers, capable of firing Quincy Arrows and Ginto Spells, even for Hakura whose geners normally did not express the Quincy traits. However, Mei had the genetic mutation called “Demon Blood”. This allowed her limited demonic abilities, but also inhibited her Quincy Abilities, burning her arm every time she used her Quincy Abilities. Kagami was one of the few who knew that the revolver was actually a Quincy Bangle a revolver, a weapon that imitated a weaker version of Quincy Skills, but could be used by anyone. The revolver slid back into Mei’s belt as she stood up. “Let’s take a day off, first…”

Deidara absorbed the information in silence as Kagami discounted what she had heard from the black order. He looked at the ground stoically and put his head in his hands. “I don’t’ even know if there’s any point in existing anymore.” Kagami’s expression softened at Deidara’s palpable utter loss of hope. “No…you can still continue like a human…” “Are you saying I’m actually not a human?” “No, that’s not what I meant, I’m sorry…” “No. You’re right…I’m less than a ghost…less than a memory—I’m just a belief given the shape of a human…” Kagami sat down. “Deidara…I once read this in a book, so this is a bit on the bootlegged side, but it’s not what cards you’re given in life that matter—it’s how you play them…it doen’st matter what you are…it’s what you’ve done that is important.” Deidara looked down. “I’ve done nothing important but kill people…what else have I done?” Kagami blushed and sat down next to him. “Well…you saved me twice…” Deidara looked away. “Those were just fortunate accide—” his retort was cut off as Kagami pulled his head close to hers and kissed him passionately. “Consider that a thank you.” “…It’s still not enough…” Kagami smiled thinly. “Let’s put it this way. Play the rest of this card game…and at the end, see how your game was…I’ll bet you that you won’t regret being born…we can both make a difference in this corrupt world.” Deidara looked up quietly at her. “Do you really think we can do it?” “Yes…I’m sure Mizuki and others will know what we’re doing is right and join us.” The two held each other’s hands.

Damn…it’s so friggin’ wet…Mizuki was cold, shivering and freezing as she knelt under the waterfall, her white robe already soaking. “This is to be attuned with nature—you’ll need it in both Niman and Vapaad,” Kohaku had said. Kirei sat nearby, also attempting the same thing. This is both perverted and pointless…On the other hand, it could work—she could think of nothing but the oppressive weight of water on her head. In pure boredom, she began to probe the rock she was under with her chakra—and surprisingly, she found a response—I can sense nature through using Chakra? She began to extend her chakra around her—some objects were easier to elicit responses from, some harder. However, she began to regulate her chakra into a steady flow that slowly began to spread, and she could acutely notice every leaf on the ground—every blade of grass. She felt something shoot at her and instantly held her hand out, catching the thrown stone perfectly. Kohaku grinned. “Excellent…now we get to the second phase.”

…I am the bone of my sword.

Phrase from Unlimited Blade Works

In an instant, everything was nothing to Mei as she closed her eyes, stretching out her chakra sense, feeling every flare of spiritual energy. Where are you…my prey… She touched on somebody with a strange aura—but it was not Itachi. Just Hidan…neeext. She moved on to the next one…Nope… FINally, she found him. Gotcha… She wordlessly stood up and grabbed her weapon, walking outside. Now…to catch up to you.
Kagami drew Kusanagi again, her curse seal activated. “jigoku no hebi: Kusanagi!” Instantly, the many ghostly snakes ripped into the wall, leaving jagged explosion marks. She had found that by swinging it and using chakra in the right style, she could manipulate the snakes into several styles. Now I just need someone to test it on…She heard a whooshing sound—and suddenly felt something rip through her belly—a black wire that curled around and came out the other end, slick with blood. What…?! She did not even have time to cry out as she plunged into darkness. Just before it covered her eyes, she saw somebody look down and speak. “Too simple.”

Kagami looked around. She was in an empty stone building, sparsely decorated. A bed of what was probably hardwood, a simple table. Where is this? “Some half-assed excuse for a shinobi you are…I can’t even safely say you’re our daughter.” Kagami turned at thevoice—to a red-haired woman in the doorway. Dressed in a black shirt and a brownish-grye tunic, she stared back haughtily, about Kagami’s age. “Who are you?” “Your motherf**’ing mother, b*tch. Don’t you recognize your own family?” Kagami now could see the resemblance—the same unkempt hair, the eyes—but this woman had the approximate derotgative vocabulary of an Irish Brawler after twenty too many bottles of Lagers. “So…you are my mother? Prove it.” “You’re a cheeky brat of a kid…but that’s balls…I like people with balls. Let’s see if yuoi can back them up then. Mateki: Genbuso Kyoku (Demon Flute: Illusionary Warriors Manipulating Melody)!” Instantly, three giant blinded giants appeared—several times larger than Kagami. Hooo crap… “jigoku no hebi: Kusanagi!” Instantly, several white ghostly snakes smashed into a golem—who merely jerked back and then charged forwards again as the woman began to paly wit ha flute. Kagami raised Kusanagi to block an attack—and was instantly shocked by the pure impact force of the blow. Then a kick from another direction sent her smashing into a wall. As she jumped off to dodge, she barely managed to avoid another giant mace. I can’t just dodge like this…and these things are impervious to attacks…I need to render them incapable of combat. She shuffled in her pockets, reaching several Captial T-shaped dagger hilt. Good. she thought as she drew them, the blades instantly materializing. As they all leapt for her, she bounced off the wall—at them. Taken by surprise, the golems paused as she shot narrowly passed, throwing the daggers—not onto the golems, but their shadows. The golems attempted to move—but were held back as the Church Exorcist-signature black keys pinned down their shadows, limiting movement. Calmly, Kagami suddenly shot forwards, slashing with his sword—leaving it just a few millimeters from the woman’s neck. The force of the blow was enough to leave a small cut. A single drop of blood stained the tunic. For what could have been a second, or been an hour, the two stared at each other—and then the woman grinned. “Nice…you beat me, you sly bastard…you really are your father’s daughter.” Kagami narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean, father’s daughter?” “I’m guessing they never taught you about who your parents were…you know about Orochimaru and Tayuya, correct?” “Uhhh…Orochimaru was one of the three Sannin and the more evil of the two, but I don’t know Tayuya…” “Well, tell me, Kagami…why do you think you have an affinity with snakes?” “No, but…you don’t mean…” “Yes, I do…your curse seal doesn’t give you any abilitides except heightened speed—and all the memories and abilities of your father, Orochimaru.” Kagami staggered back. “I don’t’ believe you.” Tayuya grinned. “Well, believe what you f*ck’in want…I wouldn’t want someone to make me believe something either…but it’s true.” Kagami drew Kusanagi and held it to her neck. “If that’s so, then I may as well end it right now.” Tayuya stared straight back. “Back up what you said, byatch. D oit.” Kagami stared back levelly. “I will.” She drew the sword back—and then Tayuya suddenly leapt in, blocking the sword with a kunai. Her face was contorted wit hrage—and then it softened. “I know…in this happy ending of this so-called fairy tale, you don’t want to be related to the evil dragon…but, you said it yourself…it doesn’t matter what cards you were dealt—it’s how you play them…walk your own path.” Kagami looked into her eyes. “Are you sure?” “…You’re my daughter. Would anything I do change your mind?” Kagami smiled. “No.” Tayuya grinned a watery smile. “Then go kick some ass there, you motherf*ckin’ byatch.” Kagami grinned back. “Of course.”

“Kakuzu, the akatsuki known to kill every single one of his comrades until Hidan, hm?” Kakuzu looked up in surprise—and barely leapt aside as a snake of some whispy mist struck the ground with a force exponentially greater than its physical appearance. Not such an easy opponent, is she?

“Itach Uchiha, you are under arrest in the name of The Order of St. Justica.” Mei held out her sword solemly. As soon as she finished, though, she smiled grimly again and cleared her sword from her sheath as the four bishops behind her also drew their own respective weapons. Itachi turned around emotionlessly. “Do you believe yourself capable of winning?” Mei grinned. “Come on, relax and have some fun.” “…Then try it.” Instantly, the four bishops and Mei attacked. Itachi watched with calm calculation. They’ve learned the wrong lesson from Kisame’s death…they believe that they can overload another’s style merely by deluging it with so many styles it’s impossible to keep up—but the fact that they all charge in at once allows any good opponent to read htem like a book. With that calm conclusion, Itachi drew two fuuma shuriken, unfurling them and using them as blades. The first bishop, wielding a morning star, swept in front of him in a frontal assault that cost the overeager man his legs. Suddenly devoid of something for support, she fell over, and a casual slash in the throat finished the trick. The other three had taken the time to sneak up behind him. They would have been able to land a hit had not the two been so shocked at the death of their comrade. One of htem, a man, swung his sword in a desperate attempt at Soresu, but a close-range fireball caught him in the chest, lsamming him into a wall where he lay still, his neck broken by the impact. Suddenly, he narrowly bent over backwards as a Naginata swung over his head as the other two bishops, yelling with rage, tried to take his head off. She was certainly a cannier fighter than the other two, and was complicated by the fact that the other, a man, was also slashing from behind. They were both using a solid Shii Cho samurai style—a powerful versatily and adaptable style—but vulnerable to nimbility. Throwing his two Shuriken at the woman, he suddenly hit them with a kunai, redirecting them straight into the protective and yet predictable man, sending his head flying off with a small spurt of blood. The last woman was formidable, exploiting every weakness. However, Itachi had none to give. He finally stabbed the woman—and then noticed the exploding note on the shadow replication’s leg, already burning towards the detonation point.

Mei watched the explosion with grim satisfaction. They didn’t die for nothing…but really, it can’t be that simple…can it? “Not a bad trap…but rather cold for your subordinates, isn’t it?” Mei turned in shock at Itachi. “So that was a Genjutsu?” “Correct.” Mei suddenly drew both her revolvers, firing at Itachi—who dissolved into a cloud of bats. “You know, I hate bats,” Mei muttered to herself. She pulled her head protector over her eyes. Sight is meaningless…I need to find the chakra signature. Slowly, the ripple of her entering the flow of nature smoothened out, and she began to feel the ripples of others—instantly, she raised her revolver and fired into what looked like empty air—but was deflected by a kunai. “So…you can use your chakra sense to see through all my illusions…impressive. Amaterasu!” A blast of black flame shot at Mei, who leapt aside as the blast literally vaporized the tiles of the restaurant they were fighting on top of—and everyone inside. Quickly muttering a quick prayer for their souls, Mei gripped three black keys between her fingers, leaping at Itachi past several more bolts of the black flame…

Chapter 12

”Do not rely on friends—if you do, do not blame
them for failing to help you—for everyone is in
a fight for survival. Friendship is only a luxury.

Dammit…how the hell do I kill a guy with four hearts?! Kagami panted. She had managed to destroy one of them, but there were still three more ready to be used at a moment’s notice, and Kakuzu’s masks were difficult to dodge. She had broken her left arm, and there sere numerous cuts and the chest wound, but she was still capable of fighting. “Well…you’ve already shattered most of my original expectations in destroying one of my hearts…but yours would probably be an excellent replacement…wouldn’t you want to be part of an immortal?” “Sorry, I’ll pass,” Kagami replied coolly. “Awww…now that just broke my heart…pardon the pun.” The wires once again leapt at her. Leaping past, she fired several snakes that bit onto the wire—but were then stabbed through the roof of their mouths, killing them. How do I kill that many hearts? I can’t win just like this… She blocked another wire—but it stabbed several centimeters into the blade. Crap…well, his hearts circulate blood…I need something that spreads through the blood through pumping…well, this might be complicated. She extended a snake from her hand and put her hand on its jaws…

Kakuzu turned around to look at the thousands of frail needles shooting at him. “Even if you hit, it wouldn’t matter…” the wire sspun in an arc, and like tears of an invisible angel, the needles shattered—but several hit. He smiled and continued fighting. No Chakra points damaged… He felt a touch of coldness, but he ignored it and continued striking nonstop at Kagami—and he was landing hits, a glancing blow to the arm or shoulder, nothing serious—but he could see and relish the pain each time—and then he felt something punch his chest. He looked down—tehre was nothing there. He barely raised his arm to deflect another attack, but he could hear something pooling at his vision. Kagami landed. “You lost?” “I? Lost? I can die three more times, and you’re wounded all over.” Kagami laughed shortly. “Look at your chest.” “A needle. So?” “Don’t you wonder why it’s transparent?” “Why the hell would I?” “…Because it’s melting.” He looked—and it was indeed melting. “A needle made of ice?” And suddenly another punch struck him, but not form Kagami as he staggered. “…A needle made of diluted frozen poison.” “Great, you destroyed one heart…so what?” He switched for another—but felt another punch. “Your heart just pumps your blood…and the poison is INSIDE your blood…pump all you like, switch as many hearts as you want…this is over.” Kagami drew out a scroll, pressing her palm to the ground. Instantly ,a web of katakana (Japanese writing) spread out—and suddenly, she was no longer below him, but above him—on a giant snake. “Meet Kirie. Kirie, this is Kakuzu…and he is dinner.” Kakuzu looked up—and his courage deserted him. “I have money…I’ll pay you anything…just…” Kagami stared at him—and then grinned. “Shut up.” And then the snake swung down. There was no time for fear—only utter hopelessness and despair as each jaw sunk into flesh.

Mei gritted her teeth with pain as she supported herself with her sword, a british Claymore. He’s good… She had managed to deal two cuts, but bot hwere minor and didn’t hold Itachi back at all. “Most other opponents died within 30 minutes at best…you’ve managed to live for two hours…I salute you.” Itachi and Mei regarded each other. “In fact, you’re still even in the condition to fight…but I have had wind that you are getting reinforcements, and getting tied up too much wouldn’t be very intelligent…so I apologize in having to end this now. Tsukiyomi!” For a moment, nothing happened—and then Mei looked around. “Tell you the truth, Uchiha, I don’t like your décor.” That was na understatement—a totally red and black world where the colors were inverted failed to appeal to her in any way, especially not the fact that she was strapped to the cross. “You know, this is a bit blasphemous…I wouldn’t mind dying, but the same way Jesus Died? St. Peter turned his cross upside-down just so he wouldn’t die like this.” Itachi calmly circled her. “You have trouble staying quiet.” “I didn’t take my pills today.” “Figures…you know about this, correct?” “Ummm…I might have missed that lesson in school…I cut classes a lot.” “Well, this is an inner world of Mangekyo Sharingan. It’s inside my world—a world where I am a god.” Mei yawned. “You mean a marble phantasm?” “…I don’t’ know hwat that is.” “Screw it, then you can’t kill me here if you’re breaking natural laws—that means this is a projec…” Mei suddenly stopped as she turned slowly at the sword extending from her side, white blood dripping slowly down—and then she was back, unharmed, on the cross again—but the pain lingered. “I can do this athousand times…millions of times…a year in here is less than a second in reality…relax…this will be a long, long year.” Even as the second blade scythed into her shoulder, Mei grinned tightly. “Wouldn’t doing this for a year bore you?” “…Not really, there are many things to do when yo ucna do anything you want…”

Jan’s Note: While I would love to talk about every stab into the liver, every slash that opened up the stomach and the many smells, screams and atrocities committed in this time period, I only have limited memory space on my computer, and a year worth of Torture phsychologically and physically is too much for even me. So…

1. Year. Later.

Mei gasped as she once again reappeared on the cross unharmed. Damn it…dying would be so much easier… Itachi strolled around. “You were right, by the way…this is kind of boring me…” Mei gritted something unwritable due to its obscenity from between her teeth and then spoke up. “Well, can you get to the killing part?” Itachi nodded—and then she was on the cross again—but not the same—she could see Sound in the horizon—the cat that had been walking across the roof when tsukiyomi had been activated was still walking across. Suddenly, she jerked back as kunai, sword and a large assortment of sharp objectes buried themselves in her body. Itachi watched, as stoic as ever. “This is a reality marble…I believe I can only do this once…but it’ll be all I need…is there anything else you want to say, Mei Hakura?” “Yes…I am the bone of my sword.

Chapter 13

” I am the bone of my sword.
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood.
I have created over a thousand blades.
Unaware of loss.
Nor aware of gain.
Withstood pain to create many weapons.
Waiting for one's arrival.
I have no regrets, this is the only path.
My whole life was "Unlimited Blade Works.”

Original Prayer of Unlimited Blade Works

Itachi looked around—he was no longer in Tsukiyomi, but a broad plain—stabbed in the ground were weapons—swords, spears, rifles, claymores, halberds, katars—weapons beyond number. “What is…” Someone spoke behind him.
My arm is the base of my blade.
Body of Iron, blood of flame.
A thousand blades beyond number.
Numb to loss.
Uncaring for gain.
For every blade, I have paid a cost
Awaiting death.
There is nothing to expect—this is the end.
So As I pray—Unlimited blade works.

Mei Hakura hobbled up, grinning painfully. “Payback for that year there…Unlimited blade Works—the reality marble passed down through the head family of the Hakura since Jan Hakura I and his teacher, Emiya Shiro…and each generation, more weapons have been added to his stockpile…every weapon seen by every Hakura is amassed here…do you believe you can win?”

Itachi’s eyes widened as they also began to revolve. “Amaterasu!” Mei closed her eyes. “Trace—Avalon.” Instantly, a sheath appaeared—and then Itachi felt a blazing heat, like nothing he head felt before—he had put himself on fire! He leapt back—just as Mei threw the sword away and drew another sword—the sword Itachi had just stabbed her with—the one that he had in his hands right now. “Only fair that we both go…Hirenkyaku!” The two closed in—

“Well, I can’t say that that was expected…congratulations, Mei Hakura, you have won the day. I salute you.” Itachi fell, the sword through his chest. Mei watched his body. “Heh…I had fun too…” and then she, too toppled, both in a pool of collective blood, even as Neji Hyuuga and the Konoha-nin arrived at the scene.
